1 Corinthians — Chapter 12

The Gifts of the Spirit and the Body of Christ

"For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ."

— 1 Cor 12:12

1 Corinthians 12 presents the doctrine of spiritual gifts (charismata) and the metaphor of the body of Christ — unity in diversity.

🎁 The Gifts of the Spirit (12:1-11)

1 Cor 12:4-7

"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord; and there are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good."

The Trinitarian structure of the gifts: the Spirit distributes the gifts, the Lord (Christ) defines the ministries, the Father works the deeds. The diversity is intentional — all gifts have the same source and the same purpose: the edification of the Church.

🏛️ The Body of Christ (12:12-31)

1 Cor 12:14-20

"For the body does not consist of one member but of many... If the ear should say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,’ that would not make it any less a part of the body."

The body metaphor confronts two errors: (1) the member who feels inferior because they do not have another’s gift; (2) the member who despises others for being different. Both violate the unity of the body. The diversity of gifts is necessary — a body all eye would be monstrous.

1 Cor 12:31

"But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way."

The transition to chapter 13: the gifts are good, but there is a ‘more excellent way’ (kath hyperbolen hodon) — love. Gifts without love are empty.
