1 Timothy — Chapter 1

Grace for the Greatest of Sinners

"Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost."

— 1 Tim 1:15

1 Timothy is one of the 'Pastoral Epistles' — letters from Paul to his spiritual son Timothy about how to lead the Church. Chapter 1 establishes the purpose of the law and the Gospel of grace.

📜 The Purpose of the Law (1:8-11)

1 Tim 1:8-10
"Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully; understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners..."
The law has a legitimate purpose: to reveal sin and lead to the Gospel. It is not made for the righteous (who already live by the Spirit), but for transgressors. The list of sins in 1:9-10 mirrors the Ten Commandments — the law still defines sin.

💙 The Gospel of Grace (1:12-17)

1 Tim 1:15-16
"The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life."
The 'faithful saying' (pistos ho logos) — a liturgical formula introducing fundamental doctrinal statements. Paul calls himself 'the foremost of sinners' (proton) — not rhetoric, but genuine conviction based on his persecution of the Church. His conversion is the supreme example of Christ’s patience.
