1 Timothy — Chapter 2

Prayer for All and the Role of Women

"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

— 1 Tim 2:5

1 Timothy 2 teaches about universal prayer and addresses controversial issues regarding the role of women in public worship.

🙏 Prayer for All (2:1-7)

1 Tim 2:1-4
"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved."
Universal prayer: four terms for prayer (supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings) for all people, including rulers. The theological foundation: God desires all to be saved (pantas anthropous thelei sothenas). Prayer for rulers is a political-spiritual act — public peace favors the proclamation of the Gospel.
1 Tim 2:5-6
"For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all."
Christological monotheism: one God, one mediator. Mesites — mediator: one who stands between two parties to reconcile them. Christ is the only mediator because He is both fully God and fully man. The ransom (antilytron) is substitutionary — 'for all.'
