1 Timothy — Chapter 4

The Good Minister of Jesus Christ

"Train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way."

— 1 Tim 4:7-8 (ESV)

1 Timothy 4 warns about apostasy in the last days and exhorts Timothy to be a good minister of Christ through example and teaching.

⚠️ Apostasy in the Last Days (4:1-5)

1 Tim 4:1-3
"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons... forbidding marriage and requiring abstinence from foods."
The apostasy of the last days: abandonment of the faith, following deceitful spirits and demonic doctrines. The specific signs: forbidding marriage and abstaining from foods — Gnostic asceticism that denied the goodness of material creation.

💪 The Good Minister (4:6-16)

1 Tim 4:12-13
"Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching."
Timothy was young (~30 years) in a culture that valued age. Paul instructs him not to allow himself to be despised — not out of arrogance, but by being an example in six areas: speech, conduct, love, spirit, faith, purity. The ministry of public reading of Scripture was central in early worship.
