2 Corinthians — Chapter 9

God Loves a Cheerful Giver

"God loves a cheerful giver."

— 2Cor 9:7

2 Corinthians 9 continues the teaching on giving with the principles of sowing and reaping, and the promise that God provides for the generous.

🌱 Sowing and Reaping (9:6-15)

2Cor 9:6-8
"The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."
The principle of sowing: generosity is an investment, not a loss. 'God loves a cheerful giver' (hilaron doten agapa ho theos) — hilaron is the root of 'hilarious.' Forced or resentful giving does not please God.
2Cor 9:10-11
"He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness, you will be enriched in everything to be generous in every way."
God provides for the generous not so they may accumulate, but so they may be more generous. Divine enrichment has a purpose: eis pasan haploteta — for every generosity.
