Colossians — Chapter 2

Fullness in Christ Against Legalism

"For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily."

— Col 2:9

Colossians 2 is the direct refutation of the Colossian heresy — a mixture of Greek philosophy, Jewish legalism, and mysticism. Christ is the answer to everything.

⚠️ Against Vain Philosophy (2:8-23)

Col 2:8-10
"See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him."
The Colossian heresy: philosophy (philosophia) + human tradition + elemental spirits of the world (stoicheia tou kosmou). The answer: in Christ dwells bodily (somatikos) the whole fullness of deity. Believers are 'filled' (pepleromenoi) in Christ — nothing needs to be added.
Col 2:14-15
"By canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him."
The cross as cosmic victory: (1) canceled the 'certificate of debt' (cheirographon) of the law; (2) disarmed the rulers and authorities; (3) publicly exposed them as defeated. The crucifixion, which seemed defeat, was the greatest triumph in history.
