Ephesians — Chapter 5

Children of Light and the Armor of God

"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit."

— Eph 5:18

Ephesians 5 calls believers to walk as children of light, and presents the model of Christian marriage founded on the relationship of Christ with the Church.

☀️ Children of Light (5:1-20)

Eph 5:8-10
"For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord."
The ontological transformation: from darkness (skotos) to light (phos) — not merely behavior, but nature. 'Children of light' (tekna photos) is identity, not just instruction.
Eph 5:18-20
"And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart."
The contrast between drunkenness and fullness of the Spirit: both alter the state of consciousness, but in opposite directions. The fullness of the Spirit manifests in communal worship (psalms, hymns, songs), gratitude, and mutual submission.

💍 Marriage and Christ-Church (5:22-33)

Eph 5:25-27
"Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish."
The model of Christian marriage is Christ’s love for the Church — sacrificial, sanctifying, committed to the glory of the bride. The husband is called to a love that gives itself up to death, not to a dominion that subjugates.
