Jude — Chapter 1

Contend for the Faith

"Beloved, I found it necessary to write to you appealing that you contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints."

— Jude 1:3 (ESV)

Jude is the most urgent letter of the NT — a passionate call to defend the faith against false teachers who have infiltrated the Church.

⚔️ Contend for the Faith (1:3-23)

Jude 1:3-4
"Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ."
The faith 'once delivered' (hapax paradotheise) — the immutable deposit of the Gospel. To contend (epagonizesthai) — to agonistically fight for the faith. The false teachers: (1) stealthily infiltrated; (2) turn grace into licentiousness; (3) deny Christ. Grace is not a license to sin — it is power for holiness.
Jude 1:20-21
"But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life."
The positive response to the threat: (1) build yourself up in the faith; (2) pray in the Holy Spirit; (3) remain in the love of God; (4) wait for the mercy of Christ. The Christian life is active — not merely avoiding error, but growing in faith.
Jude 1:24-25
"Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen."
Jude’s final doxology is one of the most beautiful in the NT. God is 'able to keep you from stumbling' (dynato phylaxai aptaistous) — perseverance is God’s work, not just the believer’s. The final presentation: blameless, with great joy, before the glory of God.
