Php 3:4-8
"Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews... But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ."
Paul lists 7 Jewish credentials — the most impeccable religious résumé possible. Then he counts them as 'loss' (zemia) and 'rubbish' (skybala — a strong, almost vulgar word). The knowledge of Christ surpasses any human religious achievement.
Php 3:10-12
"That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead."
Paul’s goal: to know Christ (gnonai auton). Not merely intellectual knowledge about Christ, but relational knowledge. The power of the resurrection and participation in sufferings are inseparable — the Christian life is paschal: death and resurrection.
