Revelation — Chapter 16

The Seven Bowls of God's Wrath

"Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on."

— Rev 16:15

Revelation 16 describes the seven bowls of God's wrath — the most intense judgment in Revelation, echoing the plagues of Egypt on a global scale.

🏺 The Seven Bowls (16:1-21)

Rev 16:1-2
"Then I heard a loud voice from the temple telling the seven angels, ‘Go and pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.’ So the first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth, and harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast."
The seven bowls represent the complete and final judgment — unlike the seals and trumpets (which were partial, 'thirds'), the bowls are total. They echo the plagues of Egypt: sores, sea turned to blood, rivers turned to blood, scorching heat from the sun, darkness, drying up of the Euphrates, great earthquake.
Rev 16:9
"They were scorched by the fierce heat, and they cursed the name of God who had power over these plagues. They did not repent and give him glory."
Human response to judgment: no repentance, but blasphemy. Judgment does not automatically produce repentance — the hardened heart blasphemes even in the face of God's wrath. Human freedom persists even under judgment.
