Revelation — Chapter 20

The Millennium and the Final Judgment

"And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened."

— Rev 20:12

Revelation 20 is the most debated chapter of Revelation — the millennium, the release of Satan, and the Great White Throne of the Final Judgment.

👑 The Millennium (20:1-10)

Rev 20:1-3
"Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer."
The millennium (a thousand years) is the most debated period in Christian eschatology. Three positions: premillennialism (Christ comes before the millennium), postmillennialism (Christ comes after), amillennialism (the millennium is symbolic, the current age). What is certain: Satan will be definitively defeated, Christ will reign, and the saints will participate in the kingdom.

⚖️ The Great White Throne (20:11-15)

Rev 20:12-15
"And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done."
The Final Judgment: all the dead are resurrected for judgment. Two books: the books of deeds (record of all human actions) and the Book of Life (the redeemed). The criterion: deeds — but salvation is through the Book of Life (grace). The lake of fire is the 'second death' — eternal separation from God.
