Romans — Chapter 16

Greetings and Final Doxology

"To the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen."

— Rom 16:27

Romans 16 is the most personal chapter of the letter — a list of 29 individual greetings that reveals Paul's network of relationships and the diversity of the early Church.

👥 Paul's Network of Relationships (16:1-16)

Rom 16:1-2
"I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church at Cenchreae."
Phoebe (Phoibe) is the carrier of the letter — she took it from Corinth to Rome. Paul calls her diakonon (deaconess/minister) and prostatis (protector/patron) — terms of leadership and service. Of the 29 people greeted, at least 10 are women, many with leadership roles.
Rom 16:3-5
"Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life."
Prisca and Aquila appear 6 times in the NT — always as a ministerial pair. Notably, Prisca is mentioned first 4 of those 6 times, suggesting a more prominent leadership role.

⭐ Final Doxology (16:25-27)

Rom 16:25-27
"Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel... to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ! Amen."
The final doxology summarizes the entire theology of Romans: the Gospel is the eternal mystery now revealed; God is the only wise one (mono sopho theo); glory is given through Jesus Christ forever. Soli Deo Gloria.
