Romans — Chapter 4

Abraham: The Father of Faith

"Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness."

— Rom 4:3

Romans 4 uses Abraham as historical proof of justification by faith. Paul demonstrates that Abraham was justified before circumcision and before the law — therefore by faith, not by works.

🌟 Abraham Justified by Faith (4:1-12)

Rom 4:2-5
"For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.'
Logizomai — to impute, to credit (an accounting term): the righteousness of Christ is credited to the believer’s account. Abraham was justified (Gen 15:6) before circumcision (Gen 17 — about 14 years later) and before the law (430 years earlier — Gal 3:17).

⭐ The Promise by Faith (4:13-25)

Rom 4:20-22
"No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. That is why it was also counted to him as righteousness."
Abraham’s faith was not blind faith — it was faith informed by the promise. He considered his body 'dead' (~100 years old) and Sarah’s womb 'dead' — yet he believed. This faith 'gave glory to God' (edoxasen ton theon). The same imputation of righteousness applies to us who believe in the resurrection of Christ.
